An attractive Worcester tea canister of ovoid vase shape on a circular raised spreading foot, decorated with the 'bat' or 'vase' pattern, c1780.

The 'Bat' or 'Vase' as it is known, comprises a large vase of flowers with a bat like creature flying above it together with a similar creature flying to the left of it. A table has a basket of fruit upon it stands to the right of the main flower vase and has an open fret work fence running across the design.

The decoration of the canister is a blue print that is very pretty emulating the Chinese decoration so popular at this period of the eighteenth century. The detail in the print is delightful, including the charming bat like creatures, the fruit and flowers.

The underside of the tea canister is marked with a Worcester disguised Chinese numeral mark, in this instant a disguised '4'. Such marks were used at the Worcester factory c1775-90. This delightful ovoid shaped canister dates from c1780.

There is a Chinese type border around the circular neck of the tea canister. Originally, this tea canister would have had a china cover that would have fitted over the raised neck - this sadly now missing.
