SOLD Chamberlains Worcester Slops Bowl of 'Waisted' Shanked Form, Decorated with Cobalt Blue Band and Gilt Decoration, Pattern 60, c1795 SOLD

(p1243)

A very pretty Chamberlains Worcester slops bowl of 'waisted' shanked moulded shape, decorated with an underglaze 'Cobalt' blue band on the inside rim, enriched and decorated with gilt decoration, c1795. Other items of this design sometimes carry the pattern number 60, however, it is likely that it is in fact pattern 61 in accordance with the Chamberlains patterns listing.

The moulded body of the slops bowl has the spiral moulded lines to the outside of the body, this is known as 'Shanked' moulding, very fashionable towards the end of the Eighteenth century. The inside of the bowl has an underglaze cobalt blue border. This is embellished with honey coloured gilding in the form of circular panels in two designs spaced by three 'flue-de-lies' . The Cobalt band is edged with gilt lines and a pretty decoration of scallops and dots. Below the cobalt blue band are gilt dropping leafage. This is a most attractive design.

In the centre of the base of the bowl is a gilt floral spray including rose buds. Around this are three tiny gilt leaf sprigs evenly spaced.

Around the outside rim of the bowl is the same dropping leafage in rich honey coloured gilding. The scalloped rim of the slops bowl is also gilded.

The slops bowl has a raised foot rim above which is a gilt scalloped line around the lower portion of the bowl.

This is a most elegant Chamberlains Worcester Slops Bowl of 'Waisted' Shanked Form, Decorated with Cobalt Blue Band and Gilt Decoration, Pattern 60, c1795.

Size and Weight: (values are approximate)

  • 3¼" (82mm) height of the slops bowl.
  • 6" (150mm) max. diameter of the slops bowl.
  • 9½oz (278gms) weight of the slops bowl.

Marks:

There are no manufacturer's marks on the slops bowl. This pattern is illustrated in 'Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain 1788-1852', by Geoffrey A. Godden, plate 411 on a tea bowl and sucrier and is said to often be marked on items as pattern 60, but according to the patterns list, could be 61.

Condition:

This attractive Chamberlains Worcester slops bowl is generally in very good condition with no chips or cracks. However, it appears to have had a touch up on the rim's gilding (where there is usually wear to the high points) with gold paint. This has not been very well done and is thick in places and covers some of the fine original decoration, as shown in the two pictures below.  Despite this, it does otherwise look very good.

The only other very minor imperfection is a faint star crack to the glaze only on the underside of the raised foot rim, as shown in the picture below.

Despite the rim having been touched up with gold paint, this Chamberlains Worcester slops bowl is a nice example and displays very well.
