A rare and very attractive Caughley tea canister, without its lid, beautifully decorated with a large blue and white print of the oriental 'Pagoda' pattern, c1785.

This very elegant tea canister is of a 'barrel' shape with vertical moulded lines and of excellent proportions. It is made of soft-paste porcelain and is typical of the shape popular at the end of the eighteenth century. This delightful tea canister has been charmingly decorated and is beautifully marked with the Caughley underglaze 'S' mark dating it to c1785.
The decoration is underglaze blue with a print of the 'Pagoda' pattern. The pattern is of an oriental scene, with a large Pagoda' and two people crossing a stone bridge. Other characters of this pleasant scene, including a sailing boat, islands, houses, rocks and trees.
Around the shoulder of the tea canister is a 'Nan king' style blue decorative border.

This delightful tea canister is beautifully marked with the Caughley underglaze 'S' mark dating it to c1785.
This stunning Caughley Tea Canister is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. There are two minor imperfections, firstly, a tiny crack on the raised rim of the tea canister as shown in the first picture. Secondly, a flea flake chip on the top edge of the inner rim the inner rim as indicated by the arrow.
Sadly, there is no lid to this canister, but it remains a beautiful item of Caughley porcelain from c1785.
