First Period Worcester Sparrow Beak Milk Jug, decorated with underglaze blue 'three flower' pattern, with a moulded lower finial, c1780

A beautiful 'First Period' Worcester Sparrow beak milk jug, decorated in blue and white with the 'mother and child' pattern, c1770. The base of the jug is marked with the underglaze blue Worcester Crescent mark.

The smooth baluster shaped body has a small pouring lip, known as a 'sparrow beak'. There is a strap open loop handle and the jug is raised on a circular foot rim.

The left hand side of the jug has the main blue and white print of the 'mother and child'. This comprises from left to right a large jar with a ladle type handle protruding, large vase of fruit, tall pedestal, a mother seated and next to her a child standing. To the right of the child is a vase of flowers.

The right hand side of the jug has the secondary print depicting from left to right a small Island with house and pagoda, Large vase of flowers, bottle shaped vase like object, pot of flowers on a tripod base.

The rim of the jug is edged in blue.

The handle of the jug is a simple open loop handle with a grove running down the outside.

The underside of the jug is marked with the underglaze blue hatched crescent of the famous Worcester factory

The underside of the jug is marked with the underglaze blue hatched crescent of the famous Worcester factory. This delightful jug dates from c1770.

Condition:

This delightful First Period Worcester milk jug is in good condition with no  cracks, repairs or restoration. However, there is a chip to the foot rim, shown in the three pictures below. This is a noticeable chip to the foot rim; but it is still a very fine example of a Worcester jug which apart from this is in very good condition.
