Salopian Jug, 'Waisted' Spiral Moulded Body, Underglaze Cobalt Blue with Gilt Decoration, c1795

(p1234)

A most attractive Salopian milk jug of a slightly oval section shape, with a spiral 'shanked' moulded body

decorated with underglaze blue and rich honey coloured gilding, c1795. I am not sure of the manufacturer, it is possibly Caughley, or Coalport. It does not have a manufacturer's mark. Certainly it is of a soapstone type body and dates from c1795.

The body of the jug is not quite circular, but slight oval in form. It has a moulded spiral shanked main body with a proud spout and high profiled handle.

There are three blue bell flower sprigs spaced evenly around the main body, these executed in underglaze blue with applied rich honey coloured gilding. Above these flowers is a garland of blue dots joined by gilt foliage.

The beautifully shaped rim and spout of the jug has an attractive wide border of underglaze cobalt blue on which is a vine and berry designed garland within two gilt lines.

The high profile open loop handle has a moulded spur on the inner side towards the handle's base. The back edge of the handle is decorated with gilt foliage.

A gilt line runs around the foot rim of the jug.

This is a delightful Salopian Jug with a 'Waisted' Spiral Moulded Body, Underglaze Cobalt Blue with Gilt Decoration, c1795 .

Condition:

This charming Eighteenth century jug is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The gilding is nice and crisp. The only minor imperfection is from its manufacture as there is some dark pitting to the glaze, especially around the lower portion of the jug. Despite this, it is a beautiful jug.
