The dish is of a squat cylindrical shape and the cover a shallow dome surmounted by a button shaped finial.

The decoration of this delightful butter tub is very elegant with a multitude of painted blue, black and gilt flower sprigs. These flower sprigs are spaced around the body of the butter tub and over the cover. They are beautifully painted and provide a very delicate decorative feature.

There is a gilt line which runs around the base of the tub, this is also repeated around the top rim of the cover.

The circular cover is of a low domed shape, with a concave area to the top portion from which comes the button shaped finial. This finial is very stylish with a conically shaped circular top. The top of the finial is decorated with a gilt segmented design in each segment there are blue dots and lines.

The cover has a deep rim on the underside so that it sits securely in the butter tub without slipping off.

A delightful and rather rare butter tub and cover, attributed to the Derby factory and made c1800.
