The tea canister is of a barrel shape with moulded vertical fluting to the body.
It has its original drop in lid with a pretty ball finial.
This very pretty tea canister is beautifully decorated with a blue
and white print of an oriental landscape which includes a large pagoda. There are
islands with houses, rocks and trees. Between the islands sails a boat and there
is a delightful oriental bridge crossing over the water. Two figures are to be
seen crossing this bridge. The blue of this decoration is very vivid and rich looking.

On the shoulder of the tea canister, is a decorative band of blue
decoration, which is edged at the bottom with a gilt line below which is a gilt
scalloped line and dots.

There are no manufacturer's marks on this tea canister, but is was made at the
Caughley factory c1785. There is the characteristic glaze free ring around the
underside of the foot around the rim, this is typical of Caughley porcelain. It
also has a gilded 'S' or '5' on the rim of the base and under the cover, which I
believe is a gilder's tally mark.

The circular drop-in cover of the tea canister is exquisitely decorated in the same design as the
tea canister body and has the same gilded rim. The quality of the
blue and white decoration is wonderful, so very detailed and clear.

There is a gilded ball shaped finial to the cover and there is
the same fine gilt decoration bounding the blue decorative border.

An exquisite and very fine Caughley tea canister, printed
with the 'Pagoda' pattern, c1785.

Marks:
There are no manufacturer's marks on this beautiful tea canister, but it does
originate from the Caughley factory c1785. It shows the typical 'glaze free'
ring around the foot rim on the underside of the canister. It also has a gilded
'S' or '5' on the rim of the base and underside of the cover, which I believe is
a gilder's tally mark.

This delightful tea canister is in excellent condition. There are no chips,
cracks, repairs or restoration. A very fine example indeed. The only extremely
minor imperfection is very minor wear to the gilding and I certainly do mean
minor.
An excellent Caughley tea canister for the connoisseur collector of Caughley
porcelain.
