Such spoon trays would have been an important item of the tea equipage in the Eighteenth century providing a place to rest the teaspoons during tea. There would only be one such spoon tray per tea service, thus they are quite rare.

This charming spoon tray is decorated in the French style with 'French Sprigs'. These delightful little sprig flowers are in overglaze enamels of blue, green and pink. The sprigs are evenly scattered around the flat area of the spoon tray and also around the raised rim. It is a very elegant design and not a common one to find.

In the centre of the spoon tray is a gilded star in a rich honey coloured gilding.

The shaped rim of the spoon tray is gilded and a further gilded line is placed at the base of the raised rim of the tray.

There are no manufacturer's marks on the underside of the spoon tray, but it is a spoon tray from the famous Caughley factory and dates c1785.

Condition:

This rare and charmingly decorated 'French Sprig' pattern spoon tray is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The only minor imperfection is a little rubbing to the gilding in some places around the rim of the spoon tray, particularly on the rim high spots, which is to be expected, but is minimal. Also a tiny amount of wear to a few of the enamel sprigs on the flat of the tray, but this is really minimal and insignificant.

It is certainly a very fine and delightful spoon tray for the collector of Caughley porcelain. An important part of the eighteenth century tea equipage and tea ceremony.
