This is a rare and magnificent Derby teapot dating from the end of the Eighteenth century, c1795. It is of a straight sided oval shape, with straight spout, angular handle and a cover with an  open loop finial.

The teapot and cover have the most stunning gilt and orange decoration. The gilding is of a very rich honey colour that just shines out perfectly.

The oval body of the teapot has around the top portion a charming decoration with elliptical orange coloured panels edged in gilding. These are interlinked with plain white elliptical panels that are profiled with the same gilding.

In each of the elliptical panels there is a gilded dot in the centre above and below which are elegant gilded stars. The ellipses are held between fine gilded lines around the body of the teapot.  These fine gilded lines are then bounded by thick gilded bands around the body. All together, this is a very rich and striking pattern.

The top of the teapot's body has very beautiful gilded foliage that runs round the front and back portion of the teapots shoulder. The fineness and skill of this applied gilding is amazing.

There is a drop in oval shaped lid to the teapot which is decorated with the same gilt and orange design that is applied to the teapot. Again the quality of this decoration is superb.

The lid has an open loop handle, so fine and delectate, perfectly matching the style of the teapot and a handle that was often favoured at the Derby factory at this period.

The loop handle is joined to the lid with moulded leaves at its base. The moulded leaves are then highlighted with more rich gilding.

The spout of the teapot is a straight conical shape and has applied gilt decoration to the sides, top and front. To the sides it has foliage and flowers in gilt. the front and top have delicate gilded foliage. the tip of the spout is gilded, as is round the base of the spout.

The handle is of an unusual angular shape, with a beautiful scrolling thumb piece at the top allowing for a perfect grip of the teapot. The back edge of the handle is completely gilded making it very lavish in its appearance.

The teapot is marked on the underside with the painted Derby mark of the crown, below which are the crossed batons, between which are three dots to each side. Below this is the 'D' Derby mark and number 616. This mark is executed in puce. This mark together with the shape and style of the teapot dates it to c1795.

This is a rare and stunning Teapot from the famous Derby factory, c1795. It is beautifully decorated in orange enamel and lavish honey coloured gilding. This is a delightful teapot for the connoisseur collector of early English or Derby porcelain.

Condition:

This quite magnificent Eighteenth century Derby teapot is in very good condition with no cracks, repairs or restoration. The decoration and gilding are in excellent condition. The only extremely minor imperfections are a very tiny chip on the base of the teapot, which I have shown in two pictures below and a manufacturing tiny firing crack in the base of the handle - this is of no consequence being from the time of its being made. I have shown this also in a picture below.
