A very attractive and rare 'James Giles' decorated teacup and
saucer, c1775. James Giles was a famous decorator who would have decorated this
Worcester teacup and saucer in his London studio. It is charmingly decorated
with a neo-classical design of 'gilt star and husk swags' in fine gilding.
The teacup and saucer are both decorated in the same elegant
gilt design.
The teacup has a smooth shaped body and has the most exquisite
interlaced foliate handles.

The gilt decoration is very fine in its execution and cover all
round the body of the cup.

There is a gilded scroll running round the base of the cup,
which is also repeated around the inner rim of the cup.

One very charming feature of this delightful teacup is the
interlaced foliate handles. This delicate design has moulded leaves terminating
the handles to the body of the cup.

The handle and leaf terminals are finely embellished with gilt
decoration. It should be noted that this decoration includes diminishing sized
dots on the leaf terminals and along the back edge of the intertwined handles -
this a know feature of Giles decorated pieces.

Inside the bottom of the teacup is a gilt floral spray.

The circular saucer has the same gilt star and husk festoon
decoration as the teacup.

The saucer has a recessed centre portion into which the teacup
sits.

The centre of the saucer has a gilded scroll round the edge of
the circular recess and in the centre a floral spray.

There is an old label on the back of the saucer that states
''Worcester 1775 recognised in gilding James Giles, Sotheby's 13/3/79' This adds
again to its provenance.

This is a rare Worcester 'James Giles' decorated Cup and
Saucer, 'gilt star and husk festoon' pattern, c1775.
