A charming Caughley tea bowl, c1785. This delightful tea bowl is
decorated with a print known as the 'fisherman and cormorant' and is marked on
the underside of the foot rim with a disguised numeral mark in underglaze blue.
These disguised numeral marks were used at the Caughley factory c1775-90.

The tea bowl has a smooth body which is translucent when held to
a bright light and shows the bluish green that is typical of a caughley body of
this period.

The outside of the tea bowl is decorated with the 'fisherman and
cormorant' pattern. This pattern shows an oriental fisherman with his fishing
rod on an Island. there is also a cormorant bird watching him stood upon a rock.
A second figure stands on a boat with a fish in his hand.

The tea bowl stands upon a raised circular foot rim. there is a
wiped free glaze ring on the inner rim of the foot, which is indicative of
Caughley.

The inner rim of the tea bowl has a printed blue and white
boarder which includes a 'pleasant eye' design

Inside the bottom of the tea bowl is a
further blue and white print which represents an Island.
